Many trucking companies fill their vehicles each afternoon
ready for the following day.
Diesel fuel can expand by about 3% in hot climates –
especially if the fuel comes from cooler underground storage.
If the trucks are parked in the sun when full, the expanding
fuel will seep out of the filler cap through the key slot. So, for a 400 litre tank the daily loss could
be 300 baht – around 70k per year!
Filling to the brim is also unwise as the leaking fuel is a
safety hazard (especially for motorcyclists). Full tanks also tend to lose fuel
due to centrifugal force when the truck corners quickly.
